Frankfurt, August 22, 2010 – The General Assembly of the United Nations in New York recently declared access to clean water to be a basic human right. Several of the countries affected by the supply problem are united in their wish for a solution: According to surveys by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) 884 million people currently have no access to clean water, while more than 2.6 billion lack toilets or basic sanitation facilities. As Wolfgang Burchard, spokesman of the Blue Responsibility initiative explains, “though the declaration of human rights is not binding by international law, the resolution does have great symbolic power and is a clear signal to the world community to at long last back up the fine words with deeds and face up to the challenge.”
